S.C.D. International Chart Agents for Shipping

"Fairway" Scheme

The "Fairway" Scheme of outfit management is designed to provide an efficient, cost-effective solution to the problems of maintaining navigation information to the highest standards on board. Ever faster turnaround in port, lower manning levels, increased vigilance by the inspecting authorities around the world, and your own desire to run a safe, efficient ship, dictate that we provide not only charts and publications quickly and efficiently but also assist in ensuring that the latest corrections and amendments are received on board regularly. By sending only the information required by a particular vessel, outfit maintenance is greatly simplified and therefore faster and less error-prone.

Supply :- As Admiralty "International" Agents we hold world stocks of charts and these are issued correct up to date of despatch. We also hold stocks of the latest editions of Admiralty, IMO, ICS, ITU, Lloyd's, Browns etc., publications and can obtain any title which is in print within a short time. Despatch of orders is generally within twenty four hours, delivery is free to offices, agents and vessels in Felixstowe, free for complete new outfits and at cost by post or courier for orders despatched daily worldwide.

Auto-supply :- Our New Edition service is very flexible and can cover any chart or publication which individual Masters decide that they wish to carry. The management of the service is free and delivery will always be arranged by the most cost-effective method possible (again free to vessels visiting Felixstowe). The prices of all charts and publications are those listed by the various publishers and are subject to special terms by negotiation depending on volume.

Correction Services :-

Correction ashore. Most suited to services where several vessels operate on the same route(s) and an extra outfit is purchased so that we correct the charts in rotation replacing each vessel's charts with the spare outfit in turn. Delivery and collection are free to Felixstowe and at cost to the rest of the world.

Tracings Service. A log and list of each week's corrections is sent with the weekly Notices to Mariners together with a tracing for each chart in any particular outfit. Logs and lists can be produced in chart number or geographic order.

ANTM's on disk. We can now supply Notices to Mariners on floppy disk. The information contained on the disks carries an Admiralty guarantee and can include tracings if required. These Notices may be despatched by post, e-mail or Inmarsat as required and may be tailored to your outfit to reduce transmission cost. The software required to read the Notices is supplied free with your first edition and will run on Windows, Mac, DOS or Unix machines. Our service also includes a six-monthly CD-ROM "Cumulative List of Notices to Mariners" which contains all corrections for charts and publications in number order and 24 hour access to the latest corrections via the internet.

Below are samples of ANTM, corrections and tracings in pdf format.

To view them you will need

Admiralty Raster Chart Service (ARCS)

The Admiralty's electronic reproduction of charts for use in a wide variety of navigation systems takes the form of raster scanned images of the familiar Admiralty paper charts on eleven regional CDs. The only system which gives world coverage and a weekly updating service.

The charts required by a user are licensed for an initial period of one year during which time weekly update CDs are sent in order that the latest information is available. The updates are cumulative therefore requiring only the most recent to be used. Periodical reprints of the regional chart CDs will be sent as produced.

SCD can provide hardware and software for a variety of applications, installation, maintenance and repair world-wide for newbuild, retro-fit or software upgrade requirements.

Although about 350 charts are held on each CD the user pays only for those required and can only access those for which an electronic "key" is held. The minimum fee for this service allows the user access to forty five charts.

For the workboat/leisure sector there is an uncorrected service providing open-ended access to charts. Updates can be obtained as required for a small fee.

ARCS charts and corrections carry the same guarantees of accuracy and quality as all Admiralty products but as the safety and effectiveness of electronic charts is dependent on display equipment and power supply in addition to the chart data itself, the use of ARCS on suitable navigation equipment, whilst providing distinct advantages for navigator and owner, does not relieve the Master from an obligation to carry paper charts according to SOLAS Regulation V20. The "Fairway" scheme opposite has been designed so as to provide for simple, flexible maintenance of paper folios during the transition to fully digital systems in the future.

The Way Ahead

The Admiralty's second generation of digital charts (the Electronic Navigational Chart) is currently under development. This vector format service will provide a legal replacement for the paper chart, automatic correction of data at sea, automatic plotting, route planning and warnings of danger. As the digital transmission of data is obviously going to play a large role in the future of navigation we are working closely with experts in the field to provide our clients with the fastest and therefore cheapest rates available as developments come to the market.

Carefully chosen hardware will enable vessels to upgrade to vector charts from raster as and when they become available.
